These are the book covers I submitted to Penguin Student Book Awards between 2018-2020.
2020 - A Night Manager
Concept:
Aim to create a sense of danger and mystery, as well as show that the story has two different sides, involving danger and the night managers travels. I did this through the cover image being set over the whole cover, so when opened fully the image is clarified, but ambiguous yet enticing on the front cover. The phone keys falling on the back cover represent the area code of the protagonist's home, England, so the image should convey that he's phoning home from abroad.
2019 - Norwegian Wood
Concept:
I used cherry blossom & central circle to subtly show that this book is set in 1960's Japan, & an outdoor table because some of the most pivotal parts of the book occurred in the forest. This book is the retelling of past events, which I noticed could be linked by the use of cigarettes & their symbolism of death. The cigarettes are burnt to different lengths, representing the 3 big deaths within the publication.

2018 - A Brief History of Time.
Brief:
Create a book cover for the adult non-fiction book ‘A Brief History of Time’ by Stephen Hawking.
Concept:
This book covered so many in-depth topics, which meant avoiding a "textbook" was crucial. I decided that the light spectrum was one of the most significant factors in space, therefore this became my focus. I captured the light spectrum using discs & water reflecting light, & I experimented with how this light interacted with water.
